My Milo pack has appeared! It's the new Milo 3-In-1 easy cool pack. Those that know me knows how much I love Milo. I have Milo In the morning with biscuits and in the office I eat Milo powder when I have a craving for chocolate and I have Hot Milo when I go for supper. And last time wheb i was in malaysia i had a milo yogurt during meal breaks( have been lamenting to my friend how it has disappeared from Malaysia supermarkets) it was absolutely delicious! And now with the new easy cool pack where you just have to pour 2 sachets of 3-in-1 easy cool then add in an amount of cold water shake it - this is so going to be my after exercise drink now! Lol. And I am going to have my night Milo milk shake!

Geylang claypot rice

My brother came back from Australia and had a craving for claypot rice so we made our way down to the famous geylang claypot rice - no 639 lorong 33 geylang Singapore 389570.

Ordered the usual dishes.
Soft shell crab
- very crispy with a tinge of spicyness. Like that it has meat making it juicy.
Duck
- my favorite. I love the lotus with it's sauce. And the duck is very tender. Nice!
Fish
- the sauce is nice but I feel it's a little oily.
Claypot rice - half grain so it will not make you feel very full. And the mix of sauce is just right.

Oh before I forget there's free parking permit provided by the restaurant - parking at lor 35.

Steve Jobs' impact on your life cannot be overestimated. His innovations have likely touched nearly every aspect -- computers, movies, music and mobile. As a communications coach, I learned from Jobs that a presentation can, indeed, inspire. For entrepreneurs, Jobs' greatest legacy is the set of principles that drove his success.

Over the years, I've become a student of sorts of Jobs' career and life. Here's my take on the rules and values underpinning his success. Any of us can adopt them to unleash our "inner Steve Jobs."

1. Do what you love. Jobs once said, "People with passion can change the world for the better." Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, "I'd get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about." That's how much it meant to him. Passion is everything.

2. Put a dent in the universe. Jobs believed in the power of vision. He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, "Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?" Don't lose sight of the big vision.

Make connections. Jobs once said creativity is connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can often see things that others miss. He took calligraphy classes that didn't have any practical use in his life -- until he built the Macintosh. Jobs traveled to India and Asia. He studied design and hospitality. Don't live in a bubble. Connect ideas from different fields.

4. Say no to 1,000 things. Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the "A-Team" on each product. What are you saying "no" to?

5. Create insanely different experiences. Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your customers?

6. Master the message. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can't communicate your ideas, it doesn't matter. Jobs was the world's greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation.

7. Sell dreams, not products. Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. It's so simple, a 2-year-old can use it. Your customers don't care about your product. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your customers reach their dreams, you'll win them over.

There's one story that I think sums up Jobs' career at Apple. An executive who had the job of reinventing the Disney Store once called up Jobs and asked for advice. His counsel? Dream bigger. I think that's the best advice he could leave us with. See genius in your craziness, believe in yourself, believe in your vision, and be constantly prepared to defend those ideas.

On June 12th 2005, Steve Jobs gave the commencement address at Stanford University. Below are a few clips from his powerful speech.

Find your true passion and do what you love to do. "Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.”

Make a difference. "When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something."

"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

Macdonald cares

Thursday 19th jan was a busy day with so many appointments at night. Decided to go for the community event for the aged from the homes organized by macdonalds to celebrate Chinese new year with them. Such a sweet thought!

A total of 38 seniors and 2 volunteers from Lion Befrienders Service Association were there. Accompanying them was mr ronald macdonald himself who made a surprise appearance with the managing director of macs. The mood was so joyful with the mc being one of the elderly macdonald employees belting out tunes and also ra ra ing everyone to clap their hands. Of course they were also treated to macdonald meals! They were so happy!

And more than this, macdonalds will be sharing their gift of prosperity by donating 10 cents from the sale of every prosperity feast meal and prosperity extra value meal between 1st jan 2012 to 31st jan 2012 ( 11 more days left!) all proceeds will go to minds - movement for the intellectual disabled of Singapore where it will be used to help needy families with children with intellectual disability.

So what does the prosperity meal consist of : at $8.30 you will have a prosperity burger of either chicken or beef ; twister fries ; orange mcfizz and a choice of dessert either apple or pineapple pie.

And If you want to do more donations to minds, you can do so at the donation boxes specially set up in 12 selected macdonald restaurants at ang mo kio, northpoint yishub, causeway point , harbourfront centre, Springfield tower, great world City, east coast park, bedok interchange, tampines mall , jurong central park , king albert park and lot one.

I am very happy that organizations have begin to be more socially involved and most importantly embracing elderly who are still happy to work and providing them with flexible hours. And also the disabled whose parents are constantly worrying about them Should they pass on. Who will accept them and help them to be independent? So it's always such a comfort when people lend a helping hand to the community. Teaching them how to fish rather than just give them the fish. It takes effort but you make such a huge difference.

For macdonalds, they started a community programme "McDonald cares" - holds a series of activities for children from minds schools to learn valuable life skills through fun games designed and conducted by over 300 macdonald staff volunteers.

Malaysia food street @ Rws

My aunt from Australia came and so we decided to visit the Malaysian food street in resort world Rws. Its has been opened since Jan 12.
The Malaysian Food Street is located at The Bull Ring (beside Universal Studio Singapore), and is open daily from 11am-10pm (Monday-Thursday); 9am-12midnight (Friday to Saturday); 9am -10pm (Sun).

We wanted to order the heon kee claypot chicken rice. Gosh waiting time was 2 hours! Gave up and went for the rest.

First up PENANG LIM BROTHERS' CHAR KOAY TEOW
I like the taste. Not too oily. Very generous with their fresh succulent prawns and their numerous huge pieces of pork lards.

Next up, was AMPANG YONG TAU FOO.
I love this dish but felt that the ones I ate on the streets in Malaysia were nicer.
In Malaysia, they put it in chunks, then you choose your ingredients and put the sauce all over it in your plate. The difference between this and the streets was that this had more ingredients in its dumplings etc.

More fried stuff. PENANG AH LONG LOR BAK
Similar to Singapore Ngioh Hiang.

My cousin heard much about the chicken rice ball so he tried.

Then we ended off the lunch with the KL HOKKIEN MEE.

AND CHENDOL ; ICE KACHANG DESSERT.

For me who always goes to Malaysia jb klang malacca etc for food, the standard I find was not up to expectations. But it was better than average I would say.

Parenting- Yes I Can!

Being a parent is never easy. Because of our own misgivings. Habits. Character. Disciplinary methods. Parents are not know-it-all , are not superhuman with no moodswings. They too have past errors or sometimes past childhood secrets that they try not to let repeat - in their own method of teaching. Wrong or right? Everything is a trial and error- but most importantly parents tried - and I think as a child we need to understand and forgive if not try to forgive.

Today I was helping out at the mcys parenting yes I can! 2012 event. After talking to the mcys/family centers staff first and foremost I would like to say thank you! Because of your dedication you support the change of the children for better, hold the hands of both parents and children and help them understand the 'language' that each coveys. Don't be discouraged. I am sure every effort made will somehow bear fruits. One way or another.

Workshop:Rethink parenting I can do it - the strength comes from believe 相信就有力量

We all have expectations for our teenagers. And to them, these expectations could be burdensome. The children will try to challenge the expectations and they want to take risk to show you that they can . if they do not have good self esteem or good worth at home they will try and find it outside- so make them realize they can find love at home and help them to moderate the changes especially during their puberty teenage years - around 13 years old or so.

And parents pls be aware of what you say or how you react - to the children they are thinking: If you can use this language to scold me so why can't I ? If you don't respect me why should I respect you. A solution: Walk away during anger - calm down to handle the situation. Let them know 我们永远支持你 and that you will always be supporting them. At times, children know they are wrong but they do not know how to turn back when peer pressure and pride is on them . Sometimes they share their thoughts with parents but parents are defensive eg they come back from school and complains how their teacher pick on them and parents use it against them judging and saying it must be you behaving badly in class - the children see how their parents Judge them. What is in your mind is conveyed through attitude and expression - and this creates mistrust and doubt - where the children feel their parents are superficial and are not sincere.

And for parents whose children keeps going on and on with " I want this. Want that." Do not reject outrightly. Discuss it with them" Why do you need a computer upgrade?" Or tell let me think about it and come back with an answer. Do not answer : you think we print money? You keep asking me for money! Important: listen. If you do not listen The children will not say. 你孩子心里怎样 look into their eyes. Put down all distraction. Stop all the 酸讽刺 you think you have wings now can fly? - respect must be show through daily activities through listening. Action. Talking during dinner etc. Children do not want to listen to your 大道理. Let your children feel that you respect them.

Most importantly have you encourage and compliment your children? 你最近称赞/鼓励孩子是几时？我做的东西什么都错! 接纳孩子的情绪。action: have a meal together per week. 爱的语言与他同行。我关心你我爱护你 on the surface as if they do not care - but they do. You must believe that one day your children will say thank you to you. For you to be able to love your children. You must love yourself first. Get support from your close ones. Do not walk thia journey alone. 要爱自己！爱了自己才有力量爱别人！要感受周围有支持：周围的人也经历过。

Lastly, pls give all children chances to change. Put away your colored lenses and open your heart to them. Relationship all comes with hurt but let your love be the medicine to the scars.

The songs that the boys from boys home and girls from girls home sang. I cried - because I felt their heart felt message inside the song.

Ending off with an invention by the boys from boys' home. A robot. Amazing potential with guidance. Lets play our part by being a supporter.

Social enterprise Shokay

Inspiring true work of action! - Article from SGE

Carol Chyau and Maria So started social enterprise Shokay long before the term became a buzzword in recent years.

Shokay, which is the Tibetan word for yak, is a lifestyle brand that designs stylish products made from soft yak down. By sourcing from Tibetan herders in Qinghai and employing women in rural areas, it helps promote sustainable income in rural China.

Shokay’s work allows indigenous herders to generate more direct income, preserve local culture, promote sustainable usage of the environment and promote community development work.

From inspiration to execution

While doing their Masters in Public Administration at Harvard, the duo decided to put the business concepts they learnt into action. The pair went seeking for inspiration on two weeklong trips in Yunnan, China in January 2006.

While there, they saw a need for poverty alleviation and stumbled upon an opportunity. China has an abundance in yak fiber, which is highly comparable to cashmere. Yet, because of its inaccessibility and lack of visibility in the fashion industry, its great potential was left untapped.

With an idea in mind, Carol and Maria went back to Harvard and entered the Harvard Business Plan Competition with a few friends, coming in first under the Social Enterprise Track. With the money they won, they returned to China and set their hearts on following the Yaks.

Right from the start, the cofounders had little knowledge about yak fiber and the textiles industry. Undeterred, they kept going to experts for help and formally founded Shokay in November 2006. Today, the social enterprise has come a long way with over 100 stores in ten countries.

Carol shared with us a few important stories on how her team got the business going with little prior industry and product knowledge.

1) Be a sponge and absorb as much as possible

While they knew that they were risking it with zero industry experience and had no background in fashion or textiles, Carol and Maria never gave up. Instead, they went out of their way to visit a lot to factories and gathered feedback from professionals. They weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty doing research and talked to as many industry experts as possible.

2) Be a detective

Carol likens this process to solving a mystery. “Sometimes all you have are clues. When you don’t understand something you have to ask why. For us, we managed to gather useful information about yak fiber by reading up on Google. For example, while yak fiber is comparable to cashmere, few people know about it.” This market gap was their opportunity.

3) Be an inventor

Carol and Maria spent the last five years experimenting with several business models, figuring out the best way to create their product and bring value to the market. They initially sold only knitting yarns, but decided to move on to the bigger market of scarfs and shawls. They’re continuing to innovate and re-invent their model. “We’re shifting from being a fashion label to ultimately being an ingredient brand. Kind of how the Intel chip is an integral part to a Lenovo laptop,” she explained.

4) Have a perspective of an eagle

Social entrepreneurs have to think about two bottom lines. Sometimes you might get lost along the way, but it’s important for an entrepreneur to have the perspective of an eagle. “When you find yourself misaligned with your original goal, it’s important to recollect your thoughts,” she says.

5) Be yourself

After all the hard work, you have to figure out how to pull everything together and make it work. You have to believe and love what you do.

As Carol puts it, “I’m not doing this because I am more philanthropic than other people out there, nor because I’m particularly altruistic. For me, it’s about a sense of responsibility. I just believe that as lucky as we are to have so much, we should give back even more.”

Closing thoughts

Carol and Maria’s philosophy and sheer determination have paid off in Shokay’s progress. Now, sourcing yak fiber from more than 800 families and having used approximately 2,000 tonnes of yak fiber, it’s plain to see how privileged ones like us can give back so much more if we just took the first step to try.

Marriage @ zoo

Miss me? ~ Been busy during the Christmas period with all the weddings.

Today I am sharing one of the unique weddings I went @ Zoological Gardens.

Arriving at the zoo, there were trams picking us up to the venue - zooming pass the animals was like a childhood memory.

Being one of the helpers, we adorned animal hats together with the zoo committee who were in charge of the wedding flow. I wore the white lion and my friend wore the panda.

As we settled down the guests and the solemnizer -
My friend and his beautiful wife arrived in regal splendour atop a maharaja-styled elephant as guests look on adoringly. Looked like a prince and princess coming down the elephant!

And we could feed the elephants after. The kids and old people were delighted. fed them mangoes, apples , water melons and honey dew.

They were suppose to engage graceful horses in a classic white Victorian wedding, complete with a horse carriage wedding but the horse was injured.
Imagine how nice it would have been too!

For a memorable moment that will be toasted for years to come, the ring bearer was a charming miniature falabella.

And I heard you can also take pictures amid a flurry of butterflies. Favorite!

Dinner was in an air-conditioned comfort at Forest Lodge.

Accompanying us home was the lovely cute animal soft toys.

Revised taxi fares Singapore

For my dear friends who sits cab all the time but does not like to read the newspaper. Here you go :)

So the solution is ....
Set aside more money for cab or sit the bus :) or try and pool people to sit the cab with you :) cheers :)

And for the article that says it should reduce rental rates rather than revise taxi fares to meet rising cost. I am back to griping how every consumer is whining about cost and how companies are unable to whine about a tightening of profits. Don't forget that our salaries are paid by the companies and the lower the profit the lower bonus so it's a cycle.

Violence - not a solution!

Some many cases of violence nowadays. What is happening in Singapore? What is happening to the youth? Is it so difficult to control anger ? To lead to a loss of life and a loss of family member? What is the solution? Education in school? Is that sufficient? Where peer pressure is so strong and to fight back helps create an identity of power?

Volunteer appreciation 2011

Grateful to be invited to the volunteer appreciation session - for it open my eyes to see that there are people who has been volunteering for 35 years. Amazing right :)
And the message that day was enlightening: we might not be all doing the same thing but the different agencies and volunteers work together to create the song. No one sees what you are doing but the impact is tremendous. Quietly supporting people who are in need. Protection of families and people. Believing in the cause. Comes from the heart.

You know you can make the diffrence: you light up my life song- dreams are the seed of change - seed of hope love and dream. Eg probational guy drop out since sec 3 motivate him step out of comfort zone and move forward.

Sowing of the seeds impact not just one but generations to come planting the seed not grown or trees that went their own way - do not be discouraged. We Also benefit from the seeds planted along the way.

Nowadays there is many schemes. She shared on helping mother at store - completely exhausted wake up 430am going to school was a relief allow one to sleep - Saturday and Sunday. I am sure you are capable of better things move up to the front ; people show that they care works wonders. You do not need to do big things small things matter. Inspire and motivate.

As civil service alone will not be able to run as much without the volunteer support. When love takes you in everything changes ---

If you can't feed a thousand people feed one.

Cpf board is stepping in to help provide a measure of financial security to children with special needs when their parents are no longer around to care for them. - via SNSS special needs savings scheme.

Current: parents set up trusts for their children with the special needs trust company but this requires a min $5000 cash.
Now: SNSS has no admin charges and no min amount.

SNSS - parents can arrange to have their cpf savings diabursed in monthly payouts to their disabled offspring after their deaths. A nominee cpf account will be created for a special needs child upon the parent's demise and funds will be disbursed from those accounts. Same interest rates as parents accounts of up to 4% with an extra 1% on the first $60,000.

Who can apply:
Parents of disabled children who are attending a special education school or who need help in at least one activity of daily living such as getting dressed eating or moving around. For people with disabilities and cannot support themselves.

When will it be Implemented:
Early 2012.

Jalan Kayu - The Hangout near my place :)

Some random sharing on Food :)

At Jalan kayu now, eating my new found love prawn mee noodle. - Blanco prawn noodle house which opened a few months back.
This stall sells 3 in 1 noodle which has pigs tail, prawn and pork ribs. Normally I eat the sliced prawn noodle - which is okay. The one that is recommended is the jumbo prawn noodle or the pork ribs and prawn noodle. Try it out!
It's beside the famous jalan kayu prata. Cost : $4 per bowl estimated.

Usually after that I will pop by Jane's cake store for their famous durian and chocolate cake.
Buy it home and chill it and eat it after a meal. Delicious.
For me, I like their chocolate cake. My parents like their durian cake though.
Opening hours: 12:00pm-6:00pm(Mon-Sat), 12:00pm-4:00pm(Sun,Ph)

Chocolate Cake: The cake is incredibly light & moist, the chocolate fudge is sufficiently chocolaty without being too rich & overall it’s not too sweet.

Durian Cake: It has a strong fragrance and the sponge is moist and soft, although I think they use a bit too much buttercream in the filling. The durian taste is covered by the cream. Its good for people who like a lighter taste of durian.

And of course! Who can miss the awesome Otah store Hiang Soon Food Catering .I love the taste of the Otah - Not very spicy and it does not have much of fishy taste. Can eat it for breakfast everyday.

SIM women leadership forum 2011

Was representing YWLC for the SIM women leadership workshop held today. It was informative and made me think deeper on the role of women and men in Singapore society. Just for those who have not been following me: Ywlc stands for the Young Women's Leadership Connection. It is a platform that aims to connect young women leaders and empower them with the aptitude and attitude to lead and serve in society through mentoring, volunteering, workshops.

One major takeaway that I had was:
You do not need to climb the corporate ladder to reach the top to feel successful.
You are successful according to how you define yourself.
Love yourself and others will love you. Respect yourself and others will respect you.

Personally before I had joined YWLC and SCWO, I had no idea on the issues that were pertaining to the women leaders in Singapore. Is it true that there is a gender disparity or is it because we feel insecure as a women? You see majority of leaders on the top ranks especially in the private corporate world to be those that are not married and who have not given their careers break for child bearing. You also hear a number of Gen Y and Gen X mentioning that they need to climb the corporate ladder so children is definitely a NO-NO or that they would rather wait till their career is much stable. Is it so for our society in Singapore? And many who has given birth, puts their family as priority and after a while, feels isolated by the working world and prefers to stay home for the rest of their life, regardless of whether they hold a PHD or higher education. Is there a fear that holds them back?

One of the issue that were brought up today by women leaders:
- Women have less leaders to emulate so they always emulate the males - but the males either find them too emotional or too aggressive. They want to voice out but is uncertain of the way to do so without stepping over the boundaries. Does voicing out mean being emotional?

And the conclusion from the seminar is that gender diversity is not about the issue of gender. It is about you accepting yourself as who you are - a female- and embracing your femininity and using it to your strengths.

- Why do we want to balance gender in Singapore senior management?

Attract talent

How to engage majority of consumers
Increase sales and shareholders value

How to stop stereotyping

In summary , Prioritize key issues action steps are :
1. Have more women role models where they are willing to step out and be a mentor. Spend a day every month to chat about the difficulties faced and how to solve it. How to balance their work-family life.

2. Bring policy makers and discuss what works and what don't. How to encourage women leaders in stepping up.

What say you ladies? Is this an issue in our society?

Movie: Tower Heist

Thank you OMY.SG and United International Pictures Singapore for the dose of laughter provided from the Ben stiller and Eddie Murphy movie" Tower Heist" Though the acting was great, I expected much more comedy especially when there are 2 of my most favorite comedians. Come on!
Probably after my last comedy Bridesmaid, I was expecting much more humor. The movie was great but did not tickle me too much.

It however made me think quite abit about life. About riches. Especially the scene where the doorman tried to commit suicide because he 'lost' all his life savings and also the guy whose family left him before he was in debt. Reminded me that riches are
temporal, enjoy them while you have and always remember to share.

Tower Heist starts with Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) scamming people out of their money via the Ponzi scheme - not just the rich people, but the people hard earned money of working their years in the hard-working upscale Manhattan residential building he was living in.

The staff led by Josh (Ben Stiller) start to work together to steal back the money that stole from them. Josh enlists the help of a criminal named Slide (Eddie Murphy) to teach him and his team how to successfully steal $20 million. Josh’s team consists of his brother-in-law, Charlie (Casey Affleck), a former Wall Street broker, Mr. Fitzhugh (Matthew Broderick), the new elevator guy, Enrique (Michael Peña), and maid Odessa (Gabourey Sidibe). We watch good, hard-working individuals trying to bring justice to a very unfair situation - being the Robinhood.

Myself ; I love the scene about the maid comments during the cracking of the code on the safe - it was hilarious.

Odessa Montero: First thing you gotta do, you gotta find the entry point. You gotta use your fingers, and you find the entry point.

Slide: No, I ain't married. What's up?

And also the comment on the buying into a white neighborhood

Josh Kovacs: The average apartment in the Tower costs 5.6 million dollars. We have the best views, the most advanced security systems, but you know what these people are really buying?

And the 'smart' move of eating without paying -Cockroaches

Josh Kovacs: "Jeez a hamburger is $24. We can't afford to eat here anyway."
Slide: "We can order whatever we like cause uh, lunch is on me!" (Holds up a baggie with a dead roach inside)

The cast is great. They helped the story flow with their character relating to the scenes of humor.

I would recommend “Tower Heist” as a fun day out movie or for families with older kids.

New Reality Show : Angel's Gate

Excited! A new entrepreneurial reality Show!

If you’re a big fan of shows like Dragon’s Den and Shark Tank where venture capitalists either destroy or bring alive the ideas of entrepreneurs on TV and , then you’ll be as excited as me!!

The Angel’s Gate is Asia’s very own version of such entrepreneurial programs

The format of these shows are similar — entrepreneurs will get a chance to impress the top angel investors in Asia and receive an investment from them.

Comprising the panel of judges for Angel’s Gate TV are Dr Finian Tan, Founder of Vickers Financial Group; Karan Singh Thakral, Executive Director of the Thakral Group of Companies (a veteran entrepreneur in consumer electronics) ; Ken Mandel, Founder of Jam Ventures ( branding and marketing guru); Patrick Grove, Co-founder and CEO of Catcha Group (ranked one of Asia’s best young entrepreneurs); and William Klippgen, Founder and Managing Director of Tigris Capital.

They’re all decked in spiffy white suits — in keeping with the show’s name, but don’t be fooled into thinking that they’ll always be nice and smiley. This is a reality show after all, and the judges are there not just to dispense wisdom, but also to entertain and provoke.

And see which entrepreneur has guts and resolve.

Angel’s Gate takes reality-based programming beyond the television set and into a whole new level. It is produced by Asia’s leading digital media company and new business accelerator, Interactive SG, and supported by Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA).

According to Ash, the 360-degree approach aims to create a new playing field for aspiring entrepreneurs: “Entrepreneurs involved in Angel’s Gate will receive more exposure than they could by any other means, empowering them through the use of technology and the media. Over and above delivering unparalleled reach and visibility, the vision behind Angel’s Gate is to create a level playing field for the aspiring entrepreneurs of this generation. We might just see the rise of the next Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump or Richard Branson from Asia,” he says.

The AngelsGate.com website went live on October 14; and more than a hundred business ideas have been submitted. The most compelling and well received ideas will advance to Angel’s Gate TV, which is set to start airing in the coming months on a regional broadcast partner.

Another thing that sets the show apart from others is that entrepreneurs can sign up on the website to canvass for votes and source for crowd-funding, which works on an all-or-nothing system. They can even seek team members online.Entrepreneurs who believe they have what it takes can submit their business ideas to AngelsGate.com. There, they can leverage their social graph (through Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) to crowd-source support for their ideas. They can even raise financial support through AngelsGate.com.

The most popular entries will then appear on the show, where they’ll to pitch to the Angels, who’ll decide on the spot if they should receive an investment from the AngelFund. Entrepreneurs that get rejected can refine their business idea and resubmit it through the website.

The deadline for this round of submissions is 31st October.

Apart from business funding, entrepreneurs will also be offered an opportunity to think about how they can make a meaningful contribution to society through philanthropy and corporate citizenship. Angel’s Gate has partnered CapitaLand Hope Foundation as the programme’s charity sponsor. Through the partnership, underprivileged children will benefit when entrepreneurs garner support for their business ideas. Where ever the participants are from, I’m sure the judges and viewers are looking forward to brilliant pitches that will set the screen on fire. If this show takes off, it could go some way in promoting entrepreneurship in Asia and beyond.

Was invited to the preview of fright fest @ the flyer - Thanks to URA, The Flyer and OMY.SG. My best Halloween night was in Mexico 2 years ago where it was celebrated together with the day of the dead and people were giving out candies to the children that were dressed as frankestein and zombies. Anyway I was very excited for my first outdoor Singapore halloween experience!

Upon arrival at the flyer, we were divided into groups of around 10. While waiting outside, we could hear screams and also the sound that Chinese funerals have. Made me hair stand.

We were ushered into the tent and greeting us were the sight of an old lady using her clogs hammering onto the praying paper. So eerie! You know how the Chinese hit on the human shaped figure and scold 打你的小人头 meaning cursing someone. We tried to quickly ran over - suddenly she stood up and aim the clog at us , gave us such a fright! We grabbed each otter even more tightly trepidation of what may appear after.

Next, we had to enter a veil but I could see a 'ghost lady' standing behind it. The fear of pushing past the veil was tremendous. Suddenly the girl with her mother on front us shouted and ran out of the tent.

I decide to just push ahead. I opened the veil and shouted! Haha I think the lady ghost was as shocked as I was. But she started heading towards me following me. Her face was in a weird shape.

I walked as fast as I could. Finally reached the end of the hall, now what lies ahead after the hall. Push past the veil and a zombie suddenly appeared in front of me- I ran-

and out of the bush came bao gong- a black face judge that Chinese know as a judge fro
Hell if I am not wrong. I screamed! Made my way ahead and was confronted by an altar where a lady holding an umbrella with her back facing me. I knew her face was going to be grotesque and boy was I not wrong. She started coming towards me asking me to take the joss stick- I decline and tried to ignore her.

And more to come was the decapitated body parts that were lying on the floor and also dead children in bath tubs-made me wonder if I was in a murder scene.

After half an hour, finally made my way out of the horror.

Be the change: series 1

Yesterday with curiosity I made my way to PA HQ for " be the change" seminar cum feedback session. It is an initiative proposed by a young team to encourage and support the younger generation(21 to 35 years old) to come forth and take charge for their community and country SIngapore. It comes about from the idea that every generation has it's own challenges and every generation must harness the energy of that generation to take the country forward- do the change via action; convince the person next to you to do the same; and it will become a powerful movement- making our country a less imperfect place .

Slightly late because of work, I sat at the first table I saw - to my embarrassment, I realized after some time I was sitting at the reserved VIP table - together with Mr Yam Ah Mee ( chief executive of PA ) and other important civil servants.

The issues that was mentioned during the session

Transportation
- propose of a 2 platform system ( like Sentosa / Jurong east / Tanah Merah line) where one can exit on one side and enter on the other side. It will solve the overcrowding issue. Think this is quite a good idea but of course to construct this will require more building space and hence also higher cost I would suppose.
- propose female cabin.
This idea is carried out in India but it is because a lot of molestation happens on the train where they are packed like sardines (how I felt when I sat the India train for both sexes) due to the huge population that they have. For us in Singapore, I have not heard of any happening yet and though our trains are packed, its not as bad. So personally, I do not think this is necessary.

Education
- propose of a increase in parental guidance and partnership for sexual education with the school. And to do it in stages since young making it ingrained deeper into their minds.
Kind of curious why sexual education is becoming a concern nowadays - Why?
- propose for the change of message: message of protection rather than abstinence in the Malay community.
Agree for this. After all it is a lighter message and the public can relate better.
- propose curriculum to be more focused on values ; more student orientated ; question asked inquiring the motivation of learning these days.
Motivation is an important factor in building up a population of talent.
- propose supervision of principals in school because the 'fame' of the school is dependent on the focus and structure of the system in place by the government;
What comes to my mind is the primary school balloting where all parents want to enter certain schools because of their 'name' and the curriculum that they have. But there are limited spaces. Should the government hence supervise the schools that have a 'not as famous' curriculum? Perhaps help them to improve?
- propose to assign teachers and students via their strength in audio, visual or touch learning methods.
I think this is a very very good idea. But perhaps to do it on a large scale is quite hard.
- propose teaching environment to focus on failure is okay - you just need to learn from it - instead of failure is a dead end. Propose learn through play.

- propose strengthening of values - kindness movement and exposing our generation to overseas via less paperwork for yep.
I still remember the kindness movement that was done in quite a large scale during my time. Though young at that time, I remember the few lines that were emphasized over and over again " give your seats to the old people" , " Smile " etc. - and how it was such a grand thing to win the kindness award. What happened to that?
- propose gap year provision before every next step in education
Only for the rich or those that parents do not need their support. Not realistic I feel.
- Propose using less computers, systems and calculators. To go back to the roots of paper.
Though I think the government / school direction was to allow their students to be more IT Savvy, they should consider the cost incurred - how about those that are unable to. Does a primary 1 student really need a computer? What is wrong with paper writing? And with the calculators used, won't it cause dependence and a lack of mental calculation - will it then cause us to be more mathematically-dumb?

Environment
- propose having 2 kinds of recycling trash bins in HDB.
Feasible? For Singaporeans who are lazy to even go down to the recycling bins below, would they just mix everything together?

Social
- propose a clear review as to whether Singapore is looking to place importance on happiness or economic growth and we having to find a balance in between.
Till date, no matter where we go, we are known as being capable and driven - and I am always proud to be a Singaporean. And I am happy. How to increase happiness when it is a personal choice?
- propose to increase social cohesion by organizing a monthly neighbor campaign where neighbors exchange their daily food dishes etc.
Currently now it is already in place but I guess it should become a national campaign- more impact?

Special needs
- propose to increase the benefits for special needs teachers where they feel as valued as their counterparts in the governmental sector. Addresses the theme of passion vs remuneration.

- propose development of the local learning industry of special needs. Currently the therapy for special needs is only taught overseas - most will not be able to afford the course fees.
Agree! I would take the course if it is taught here at an affordable price.
- propose a program to let the normal kids and special kids interact on a regular basis as it allows for integration and compassion.
Very very good idea! Then everyone will understand how special kids are like them except them perhaps do things a little slower /they need a longer time to understand instructions - but they can still do things and work! Then the community can open up their mind and embrace them into their work place. And as a normal individual, we should offer our help to be their partner in the work place to be a support when they need it. Propose that to your HR!

Elderly
- propose for a focus on community health. Help create a stronger initiative between the private GPs and the elderly.
Good idea. Benefits both parties.
- propose programs that teaches and shares dialects Which the younger generation have lost touch of.
Good idea. I will sign up! Make it available in the CCs - at convenient locations! This will also increase interaction between both generations.

Expected more from this session but the size of the audience was really encouraging. It's a delight to see so many so interested in contributing back to the society. Lastly I want to end off with my own personal thought: if you have complains and grouses about policies and the way how things are now, do not just whine about the problem; give the solution.

Let's work into making Singapore a better place ; not for ourselves but for every singaporean :) cheers

Social Entrepreneurs of the Year in Asia for 2011

Lets applaud those who spend a lifetime making a change for the world - for those who needs help but everyone is too busy to do so.

Five entrepreneurs have been recognized as Social Entrepreneurs of the Year in Asia for 2011.

They hail from Cambodia, Japan, the Philippines and Pakistan, and address issues like healthcare, distribution of everyday goods to inaccessible places, nutrition in impoverished areas, and clean water supply.

The award was given out by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, a non-profit, independent organization that advances social entrepreneurship.

The winners are:

Bam Aquino & Mark Ruiz , Hapinoy, Philippines

Hapinoy provides business mentorship, leadership development, and branding assistance to women entrepreneurs who own small stalls in urban and rural areas. These women also get 5 to 15% cost savings and greater diversity of goods through Hapinoy’s bulk-sourcing and supply delivery network.

Lo Chay, 1001 fontaines pour demain, Cambodia

1001 fontaines uses sand filtration and solar-powered water purification technology to provide clean and cheap drinking water to over 50,000 people at US$0.01 per liter. Village entrepreneurs are taught how to maintain the water production site and distribute/sell the water.

Asher Hasan, Naya Jeevan, Pakistan

His enterprise partners with corporations to roll out catastrophic health insurance to low-income workers making less than US$6 per day. Drivers, nannies, cooks, waiters, and security guards can be insured at US$2.50 per month with a yearly coverage limit of approximately US$1,780. Naya Jeevan also value-adds the insurance coverage with annual medical checks, preventive care workshops, and access to a 24-hour medical care and claims assistance hotline.

Masa Kogure, Table for Two (TFT), Japan

One in seven people suffer from malnutrition, while 1.6 billion adults in the world are overweight or have health conditions related to ‘over-nutrition.’ TFT corrects this imbalance by transferring excess calories across the globe from developed countries to developing countries. Corporate cafeterias, university dining halls, and public restaurants serve balanced and healthy TFT meals, donating USD $0.20 per meal to lunches in impoverished African schools.

Food For Thought - Yummylicious

Had the opportunity to try out the delicious food and desserts of Food For Thought. It is just beside SAM Museum, Opposite SMU Library , Near circle line.
Address: 8 Queen Street (8Q @ Singapore Art Museum).

Once I stepped into the place, I knew I would love spending hours there.
The design of the place, the items all around and of course the food, such amazing combination and comfort.

And as usual I always support cafes that give back to the society - and at their counter you will spot the number of organizations and causes that they support.

And they also convey the causes through the design T-shirts; badges etc that they make with the explanation and thought process that goes through it.

Welcoming us next was the ice cold home made lemon tea that had bits and pieces of lemon squeeze in it. I love it!!!!

And I started with few zucchini tarts into my mouth- I find this a very good appetizer!

And my next love! Potato Gratin with fresh juicy mushroom, and chunks of big potato slices among the cheese. Totally love it. I had 3 servings of that.

And following that we had the pizza which had my favorite chunks of red and green pepper in it. The crust is a bit too thick though - was too full after eating that.

Wanted to skip the fried chicken but it looked so good! And buy am I glad I did not skip that the flavoring on the crispy skin and the juiciness of the chicken - yummy!

And of course I kept my stomach for the famous desserts.

Their cream mousse puffs - not too sweet ;Just nice.
And I love their melting brownies. It seems like there were a mix of the melted ones and the ones that were in perfect cooling stage. I prefer the melted ones - chocolate with cranberries and nuts. Favs!

A tour around the heartlands in Singapore

Yesterday, together with neesoon yec we made our way to exploring the different heartlands in singapore- to see how we could better understand and contribute yo the needs of the public as an individual; as a community; as a singaporean. What type of public spaces is needed for the aging population? More shops so they have a place to gather and interaction? How can we build a community to increase Social cohesion.

Then we move through the corridors of toa payoh where a majority of the old generation were staying in the one room rental flat. Where they complain that when there is someone dead in the house- no one knows till the smell comes.How to solve the problem? Do we have Someone to constantly check in to take attendance? Will it work? For the rental rooms, for1 month they pay $26 for the one room rental. These Older generation cannot blend into Singapore fast economy and have seem to lose the belonging - should training be given. Will it help? Bought in the 1930s. These group needs Education on identifying food expiry-which are in English. Neighborhood. Ownership.

Also on elderly abuse - How can we help?

And the first time I have seen this. A detector for the elderly when they are in need. It will supposedly flash the unit number when someone in the unit pushes a certain button in their house and someone from the community can rush up and help. A very good idea I would think.

Then we also visited the house which Adrian lim used to stay;Adrian lim supposedly murder a number of children and dump their bodies in his house Toa payoh 07-46.

And also for the thefts that happen at night. Centralized void deck policepost opens from 12noon to 11pm and the Thefts always happen afterthat. Who else can help. It is not just the policemen. It is us, the community near them.

And the last thought:
Everybody. Somebody. Anybody. Nobody. Everyone point fingers but actually anybody can do it.

After the heritage tour, we made our way to Sam museum to view the Singapore yellow ribbon project art exhibition- drawings and potteries done by inmates were on display. Really deep thought art work!

The drawings and potteries really made me think about life and about 2nd chances. Being at a wrong place at a wrong time, Being in the wrong company, Being born into a messy family, Just committing a mistake once - and now wanting to make amendments with their family and society, yet few wants to give them chances. Of course, with articles featuring how some of the companies who were 'betrayed' yet I believe there are also many stories whom were successes. If only we give them a chance.
Have we not also committed mistakes in our lives, though not to the point of being convicted and into prison, yet I am sure through every mistake, when we get forgiven or when we get another chance, it is a treasure.
GIVE THEM A 2ND CHANCE.

And ending the day was the dissolution of the 10th term yec who has done so much for the nee soon neighborhood (and the thanking speech by MP Lee Bee Wah) and the introduction of the new 11th term yec. We will all be supporting you all. Cheers !

Prawning at night

Such a fun night yesterday my first time at prawning @punggol. Just follow the road of punggol east beside riveria lrt.

We managed to catch a prawn after some time. Boy does it take patience. So first you rent a rod and you measure the height of the water so the bait does not touch the ground and ut is dangling for the prawn to eat the bait. Then you look at the following ball in the water connected to your rod; once it goes under the water it means the prawn has taken the bait then you put your rod parallel to the water then pull.

Next to the prawning was the fishing so interesting! Seems very fun though. Once you catch the fish you need to pat the fish let it relax then jerk it outbid the water. Because if it struggles it might break your line.

Very fun I am going back there soon! Hahahaha

Giving the support ; Holding their hands

Much apologies dear readers for the lack of update, been busy exploring ideas on implementing a long term social plan for 2 groups in consideration ( Either the ex-offenders Or the adults with mild disability) in my company and learning from social entrepreneurs how it has been done.

I have a heart for both of these groups because of my personal volunteering with them and sees how we can help them by embracing them back into our society, and treat them like one of us. And one of the way I am coming up with is to provide training and jobs opportunities for them.

For Ex-offenders, I have talked to a number of people and to many, it is still an issue that they struggle with because they have the belief that its a nature/habit that the ex-offenders have ingrained within them that is difficult to change. I do not deny it is untrue - but it is not for all. There are offenders in the prison through the time in incarceration have realized that it is not only them who are hurting, but also that of their family members and they are determined to make a change. And these are the people I believe we should lend a helping hand. Make them feel confident in saying "I am an ex-offender but I am a changed person" instead of hiding their past.

I remembered crying when they sang the song. For those who lack their family support (which is usually the case that they re-offend), can we be that missing support?

Same as I always tell my friend. For lower income family whose children are already in secondary school, I think the mother should come out in the working world and help add on to the family income and pull the family out of poverty. Help and encouragement must be provided for them to give them the courage to step back into the working world. Its not only for them but for the empowerment of their family - specially for their children. I have witness the difference and I hope these stay-home mothers ( whose children are independent enough then) to help lighten the load and stress of the poor fathers. Even well-to-do families have 2 persons working now - does it mean their children needs lesser attention that those who are in the lower income? I might receive some backlash for this - but do know I come from a sincere heart - and know that it makes a difference.

And for children/adults with mild disability either as a physical disability, mild autism or..., is there an avenue for them to become more independent so their parents can feel more assured for their children instead of constantly worrying (should anything happen to them what will happen to their 'child'). I have friends who are parents of children with autism and they know no where to look for support ; either than work hard and hope that they can set up a fund to ensure their child have sufficient support should anything happen to them.
I am thankful and delighted when I see schools set up for them to teach them skills and things of the mainstream school - building their foundation. And I am elated when I hear parents or companies setting up food places to let them train their learned skills practically.

Dignity Kitchen - which operates within the Balestier Market Food Court – is just like a food court, occupying a four-stall space and a classroom for lessons ( Which unfortunately closed last August 2010) and Happy Arts Vegetarian Cafe who employ metta adults giving them practical training during their school time and many others.

Scott Harrison was 28 years old, sitting on a beach in Uruguay with a model girlfriend, a Rolex Watch and a BMW waiting nearby—a life the nightclub promoter in New York City had been chasing after for nearly 10 years—when he realized (in his own words) "what a selfish scumbag" he was. His entire adult life had been geared towards serving himself and the club patrons, and when he had done nothing to help others, it made him step back.

Seven years removed from that day on the beach, Harrison is still in New York , heading up Charity: Water a non-profit organization that has delivered clean drinking water to over 1 million underserved people in 17 different countries, and aspires to help more than 100 million in the next ten years. How serious of a problem is he tackling? In short, nearly a billion people on the planet don't have access to clean, safe drinking water (that's one in eight people). One of the most successful social entrepreneurs of our time, Harrison's visionary non-profit grew over 100% in the first quarter of 2011 (as compared to the same period in 2010), the economy be damned.

Brenda Palms Barber, Chicago's Queen of Second Chances, is dedicated to finding jobs for former prison inmates. But when the nonprofit she runs couldn't overcome employers' resistance to bringing on ex-offenders, she spun out a business so she could hire them herself.

North Lawndale Employment Network, or NLEN, is located in a west chicago neighborhood in which 57 percent of the population has done prison time. "People here don't talk about incarceration in a negative way," says Palms Barber, who is NLEN's executive director. "They don't say, 'My son is coming out of prison.' They just say, 'My son is coming back. And he needs a job.' "

But when Palms Barber, a career foundation worker, took charge of NLEN in 2000, persuading employers to take a chance on clients with a criminal record was a tall order. The only answer, she decided, was to launch her own business to hire and train former inmates. Hence, Sweet Beginnings, a wholly owned subsidiary of NLEN that produces honey and honey-based skin care products and is staffed almost entirely by ex-offenders. "I had to demonstrate that ex-offenders can be good workers," Palms Barber says. "They can also be good for your bottom line."

Palms Barber toyed with several business ideas (a temp agency, a landscaping company, a delivery service) before a board member introduced her to a friend who raised bees. "He told me beekeeping was a profession passed on by word of mouth," said Palms Barber. "I liked that, because people learn well by storytelling, especially when they have academic challenges." Sweet Beginnings launched in 2007 with $140,000 from the Illinois Department of Corrections. At first, the company sold honey at farmers' markets. But the 13 percent margin on honey was not enough to fulfill Palms Barber's second goal: to create a sustainable source of income for NLEN and free it from the unpredictable ebb and flow of grant funding. Honey-infused skin products were a more lucrative proposition.

How to Become a Social Entrepreneur: Know Your Issue

What made Harrison's mission different? While in Liberia taking photos, he recognized the one item that was causing sickness and even death for most of his subjects was something many of us take for granted, clean water. He saw it (people walking miles to get clean water), photographed it (including emails to club-promoting friends) and found his calling. When he returned to the U.S.A he knew what issue to tackle, and he has never looked back.

Regardless the issue, you need to be 100% in on it. "The biggest mistake I see most people make is that they're half-in, half-out," notes Harrison. It's great that you want to help others, but you need to know what you're doing. And it's not easy. So if you're not sure what to do, look into joining another existing non-profit until you find your passion.

As Sweet Beginnings it is an unexpected little company, tucked away in a neighborhood of vacant homes and boarded-up stores. In a pocket-size lot behind a chainlink fence, men and women wearing what look like modified hazmat suits tend an apiary humming with small, furry life. In addition to raising bees, former inmates perform jobs that include manufacturing, website management, sales, and customer service. Most work 90 days, although a few stay on as team leaders for a year or so. The perpetual turnover is not ideal from a management perspective, but it's the only way to provide experience and resumé entries for large numbers of people. Employees are paid minimum wage; payroll costs are subsidized by the city and the state.

With Sweet Beginnings on their resumés, roughly 85 percent of employees find an unsubsidized outside job, compared with around 50 percent of NLEN clients who have not worked at the honey business. More important to Palms Barber: Fewer than 4 percent of Sweet Beginnings's workers have landed back in prison, compared with a national average of 65 percent.

How to Become a Social Entrepreneur: Build the Brand

To get the message out, we had to create an epic brand that people could trust to do that."

For charity: water, it was about re-creating charity. He built a 100% model (finding separate donors to fund staff and operations) and wanted to show donors all the work they helped to fund. The first employee Harrison hired was in operations, and the second a designer who helped to build the brand from scratch, differentiating it from other charity websites. And for the name, he simply thought of what he was doing as charity and added whatever the first thought he had was, which unsurprisingly was water.

How to Become a Social Entrepreneur: Think of It As a Business

"The modern non-profit must adopt many of the same strategies, policies and best practices employed by successful enterprises in the for-profit world, but not at the cost of its soul," writes Scofield.

While it is important to function as a non-profit in legal terms, the most successful charities are well-run organizations, no different than for-profit companies but with a different business objective. Literally every element of your brand should be business-driven. For charity: water, their sleek New York office consists of donated goods but rivals any top creative agency, they employ sophisticated CRM software to learn more about their donors (like a salesperson would a client), and plenty more.

"I think of charity: water as a for-profit tech startup that has no profits," says Harrison. "We give away 100% of our profits. So the better year we have, the more people around the world have access to clean water. Our shareholders are people in 17 countries around the world waiting for a rig to drive into a village to provide clean water to a few hundred people living there. We use the word business so much more than non-profit, even though that's what we are."

For sweet beginners, today the company brings in about $100,000 a year in sales; it projects sales of $2 million in five years. The business sells its Beeline-branded products (soon to be renamed Beelove, for trademark reasons) at 13 Whole Foods stores—at which employees practice interacting with the public by handing out samples—in boutiques around the country, and at farmers' markets. Recently, Palms Barber negotiated a deal with the Chicago Peninsular Hotel part of the luxury chain, which will offer Sweet Beginnings's honey in its restaurant and tell the company's story on its website. And the Chicago Department of Aviation has agreed to house a Sweet Beginnings apiary and sell Beelove products at O'Hare International Airport.

Since 2007, about 200 former inmates—up to 15 a quarter—have worked at Sweet Beginnings, and, as the company grows, it will accommodate more.

James White worked on Sweet Beginnings's production floor in 2009. He was later hired by Christy Webber Landscaping and recently launched his own landscaping business. "All I had on my resumé was stuff I did when I was incarcerated, like librarian's assistant," says White. "Sweet Beginnings is a name people know. They taught me to be professional and dedicated to my job. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be where I am."

Upon return, I was invited to Project Inspire by UN Women UNIFEM which I am a member of, to view the top ten finalists who were shortlisted from hundreds of submissions where their entries were uploaded onto the Project Inspire website for public voting.
That day was the ‘live’ pitch.
It was a forum full of passionate social entrepreneurs - who aims to make a difference in many underdeveloped countries.
Date: Wednesday 24th August 2011 845am to 215pm at INSEAD Auditorium.

What then is Project Inspire about? It presents 18-35 year olds with a 5-minute platform via a video or a written pitch to articulate their inspired idea to the world and win a US$25,000 grant to make their idea a reality. The grant will be used to bring to life the winning idea and empower disadvantaged women or children in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa through education, skills training, financial inclusion or social entrepreneurship.

It is a joint initiative by UN Women Singapore and MasterCard, Project Inspire was launched in March to commemorate the 100th year of International Women’s Day and to celebrate MasterCard’s 25th year in the region.The 10 finalists – from Australia (2), Ghana, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore (2), India and the Philippines (2) – were selected out of 450 youth teams worldwide who submitted their life-changing ideas to empower women and girls across Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

The Singapore National Committee for UN Women (UN Women Singapore) and MasterCard Worldwide awarded the USD25,000 Women’s Empowerment grant to them

Their winning project aims to support 1,000 women ‘sari-sari’ (or neighborhood convenience store) owners in Luzon in the southern Philippines through micro-finance. Hapinoy trains the women micro-entrepreneurs in personal and business development, management systems, and better priced goods, and introduces additional revenue channels.

What or who is your greatest source of inspiration?

Our greatest sources of inspiration are our nanays (mothers). They are the most important collaborators of Hapinoy as they co-create the components of the program with us. We’ve witnessed the transformation of their mindsets, self-image and belief systems. We take inspiration from them as they transform into empowered entrepreneurs, mothers and wives. And most of all, our nanays have found a larger purpose than just to grow one’s business - it is also to help their local communities. Hapinoy is a distribution platform made up of the poor, in order to help the poor.

Why do you think women’s empowerment is important?

Here in the Philippines, we have a saying: "Ang ina ang ilaw ng tahanan," which translated means “The mother is the light of the household.�? Our belief in women’s empowerment is also embedded in our culture. There also have been studies that show women are good entrepreneurs because the bulk of their revenue goes to their families and towards good investments. We are confident that the empowerment of women will create sustainable communities.

How will you change the world for women and girls?

Hapinoy believes that given the right access to goods and opportunities, the poor will be able to lift themselves out of poverty. We work towards the economic and social growth of the communities we engage. We believe we are changing the world for women as we help develop them into successful micro entrepreneurs and leaders of their communities.

What can other people do to help disadvantaged women and girls?

Collaboration is key for the Hapinoy program as it is made to be a platform for like-minded individuals, institutions and corporations. They not only provide another perspective to what we’re trying to achieve, but they’re stakeholders on board with the program.

Women have the power to lift themselves out of poverty. All they need are opportunities to take. With the co-creation of programs between different groups and individuals, we believe we all can create big opportunities for women to change their lives for good.

The judges also awarded a special grant of US$10,000 to Mark Cox, who represented his team from Thailand for the Best Financial Literacy/Livelihood proposal.

Their project, ‘UPLift Initiative’will empower Burmese women migrants living in landfills at the border of Thailand and Myanmar by building a women’s resource centre that provides financial literacy training and skills for income generation activities.

What or who is your greatest source of inspiration?

All of us have been profoundly affected and inspired by our mothers. Nobel says, "My greatest source of inspiration is my mother. Even though she is uneducated, poor and lives hundreds of miles from me, she has spent her life struggling for our education and survival. Her mind is noble and her encouragements have kept me traveling towards my goals. She is the strongest woman I have ever seen in my life and she has always been my role model. Because of her encouragement and guidance, I am an educated, independent woman who helps others in our community."

Why do you think women’s empowerment is important

All humans on this planet have equal rights to live their lives with dignity. There are far too many examples all over the world which indicate that this is currently not the case. Women face domestic abuse and rape in every country of the world. A disproportionate number of people living in poverty are women. Women’s empowerment helps women take up the struggle to attain those basic, equal rights, and to live in a world with the dignity and respect they deserve. Women’s empowerment is important for everyone, male or female, in helping to create a world that is fair and just for all.

How will you change the world for women and girls?

Currently, in the Mae Sot area, we are working with women from Burma so that they have the capacity to improve their own livelihoods under difficult circumstances. Women who increase their income will be able to afford an education for their children, which will improve their chances of a better life in the future. Our livelihood projects not only educate and improve the lives of women participants, but also enable girls, who sometimes cannot attend school with their brothers due to financial constraints, to stop working alongside their mothers and to start attending school.

What can other people do to help disadvantaged women and girls?

Every single person has the ability to make an impact on the lives of women and girls no matter where they live. Disadvantaged women and girls often take daring risks and make small gains in difficult conditions. Sometimes just recognizing their success can make a difference. Volunteering to mentor a young girl as a Big Sister can change a life. Teaching a girl to read can have a lifelong impact. Encouraging girls in their work and study and recognizing women’s work as work is something that everyone can do everywhere. Anyone can speak out against domestic violence. Everyone can make a difference.

In a surprise development at the Grand Finals, MasterCard also put forward a US$10,000 special prize for the Most Creative Community Outreach proposal, which the judges awarded to Madhura Dutta for ‘Painting the Road to Empowerment’ from India.

Her team’s program benefits abused and discriminated women from Pingla, East India, who have a unique culture of earning a living by singing and painting. Her winning project aims to replicate the successful Pingla model in the nearby village of Chandipur, bringing this artistic talent to the production of diversified products including decorative scrolls and other artworks.

Painting the Road to Empowerment

Who the project helps: Women and girls in Chandipur Village, IndiaWhat or who is your greatest source of inspiration?

There is a huge challenge and potential of bringing about social empowerment in India through folk tradition targeting an equitable society and better livelihood especially for women. The success of using creative talent embedded in Patachitra art of indigenous women communities to develop alternative avenues for their socio-economic development is a great source of inspiration for us. The women artists of Pingla have been greatly inspired by their own paintings and the opportunities they get to display their art to the wider world. They feel great to engage in Patachitra painting professionally alongside their household work.

Why do you think women’s empowerment is important?

India's progress has been slow in attaining the MDG [Millennium Development Goals] of achieving gender equality and women empowerment by 2015. Participation of women in employment and decision making remains far less than that of men. There is a severe lack of priority of women development in terms of health, education, livelihood and equitable share within the family due to a strong culture of patriarchal society. Though the socio cultural stereotypes pose a serious challenge to the cause, Patachitra women of Pingla have their own income sources leading to recognition and an identity based on their rich cultural capital.

How will you change the world for women and girls?

It is essential that the women of Chandipur village who are painting Patachitra art believe that their inherent traditional skills can give them a life of respect, dignity and financial independence. Today women artists at Pingla have acquired an identity of their own, attending exhibitions and fairs across the world with an income rise from an average of 10 USD per month in 2004 to 250-300 USD in 2011. Upholding and replicating such successes that rural marginalized women have achieved for themselves under Banglanatak.com's initiative of “Making Art a Source of Livelihood�? will be the key to mobilize and empower women of Naya village.

What can other people do to help disadvantaged women and girls?

People need to work for enabling action led by disadvantaged girls and women to usher change. Exposure helps people to grow. When women come forward and join the development process, then their vulnerability decreases and they themselves can develop solutions to the daily issues. Attaining MDGs like poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment essentially requires multiple stakeholders to contribute towards the same. People need to come forward with their knowledge, skills and ideas to strengthen such initiatives supporting livelihood generation for women and facilitating access of the disadvantaged women to all the available services and resources for a holistic development.

Paralympics Swimming Championship 2011

Last Saturday, Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation), together with the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), hosted the inaugural SPH Foundation National Para-Swimming Championship 2011 at the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.

They were competing in swimming styles such as Backstroke, Butterfly and Free-Style.

The event, an annual highlight in the disabled sports calendar, is for swimmers aged 7 years and above. The participants will compete based on their physical or intellectual disabilities. Races are held in all four swimming strokes, ranging from 50m to 400m.

A total of 97 swimmers will be taking part in this year's championship. The youngest and oldest participant is nine years and 55 years old respectively.

This competition also serves as a platform to identify junior swimmers for the Singapore Sports School and potential athletes for the national squad, with promising swimmers to be selected and groomed for the ASEAN Para Games 2011 in Indonesia and the 2012 Paralympics in London.

The event’s Guest-of-Honour is MG (NS) Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts.

Theresa Goh

Born with spina bifida, Theresa Goh started swimming at the age of five. She is one of Singapore's top athletes and was awarded Sportsgirl of the Year for two years in a row in 2002 and 2003, Sportswoman of the Year by the Singapore Disability Sports Council in 2004, and the Singapore Youth Award in 2005.

- Born with muscle dystrophy, a disease which causes her muscles to degenerate slowly.
- She is a Secondary 4 student at Bendemeer Secondary School.
- Swims backstroke in the 50m freestyle (S3) event. Most competitors use the front-crawl.
- Despite her fist-like hands and weak wrists, she compensates with super-fast strokes. While able-bodied backstrokers swim with their nose and mouth above water most of the time, her head is tilted back and submerged, so that her hips can rise higher, reducing the drag created by her limp legs.
- To start the backstroke race, she is dangled by her arms, which are held by her coach, Ang Peng Siong. To turn, she swivels 180 degrees on her back.

And first time contestants Adam Kamis, age 30, and Vellasamy s/o Subramaniam, age 27, competed in the 50metre and 100metre Breaststroke events.

Adam Kamis is one of SDSC’s elite track & field athletes who have taken to competitive swimming as part of his rehabilitation. He completed a full sundown marathon!

Journey of Paralympics participation for Singapore

	- 1988: Send a squad to participate in the Summer Paralympic Games (Seoul) Despite winning no medals in the 1988 Summer Games, Singapore continued to send teams - 2008: Six athletes came home with four medals. The 2008 Games was the first time Singapore has won a medal in any Paralympic competition.

	Not just in swimming, but in many other sports. There are Singapore sailors Jovin Tan and Desiree Lim Laurentia Tan in the Equestrian event. She is an equestrian dressage rider for Team Singapore. She lives in England where she trains with her horse called Nothing To Lose, also nicknamed Harvey. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and profound deafness as a child. Singapore Paralympic wheelchair racer Eric Ting – who is paralysed from the chest down - go through the paces in the gym late last week. He represented Singapore in wheelchair racing in the Beijing Games. He was an ex-commando who became paraplegic after a car accident Firdaus bin Nordin, our national wheelchair racer I know I have missed out some! But anyways, congratulations in making it thus far. Keep going~ all of you are an encouragement to all of us.

	2012 London Paralympics. Go for it Singapore! And lastly congratulations also to the OSIM Triathlete who was mute and deaf and used this as an advantage to come in top placing in the Tri last Sunday. Thumbs UP!

Movie - Bridemaids (Thumbs Up Comedy!) ****

So thankful to OMY.SG for making my Wednesday such an amazing night. - Tickets to the screening of " Bridesmaid"

It was the next most hilarious comedy other than White Chicks. My friend and I were rolling on the cinema chairs, trying hard to control our laughter!

Annie's (KRISTEN WIIG) life is in a mess: Her baking cake shop had to wound up because of bad business ; Her ex-boyfriend left her when it did; She then had to start working at a crap job in retail jewelry sales (where her mother recommended her in ) to make ends meet, drives a junker, lonely, hooked on a jerk named Ted (JON HAMM) who is enjoying her company just for the sex.

Her only joy each waking day is to be able to talk to her best friend Lillian (MAYA RUDOLPH), a lifelong best friend who has been with her through her ups and downs in life ; Does everything and anything together -and being the voice that helps her out in situations.

Lillian, though, surprises Annie one night by announcing her engagement and asking Annie to be her maid of honor.

The comical part starts during Lilian's engagement party where Annie is introduced to the bridesmaids and gets into conflict with Helen (ROSE BYRNE), a wealthy new friend of Lillian's who is an expert at throwing lavish parties and get-togethers.

Helen is especially impressive to the three other bridesmaids: the uncouth Megan (MELISSA McCARTHY); the unhappy Rita (WENDI McLENDON-COVEY); and the uncomplicated Becca (ELLIE KEMPER).

No matter what Annie does, her plans always go awry. And the additions of the unique characters of the other bridesmaids just made it ever so funny!
Scene 1:
The Brazilian restaurant she picks for a ladies' lunch gives each of the women food poisoning, which ends up them shitting everywhere in the high-end wedding boutique toilet and one even on the road ' in their bridesmaid wedding fittings'. And she trying to act normal to Helen to prove that the food was not a problem.
Scene 2:
An airplane trip to Las Vegas for the hen's night after Helen gives Annie a mix of liquor and pills to calm her nerves due to flying. She goes berserk on the plane and does really weird things. And the other bridesmaids were so so so so absurd!

Quote from the movie - conversation with the flight attendant when he asks her to go back to her economy seat and closes the curtain of first class
Annie: "I'm gonna leave this (curtain) open! Cause, it's called civil rights! This is the 90s!"
Flight attendant closes the curtain again. Annie comes back in first class.
Annie: "Whatever you say, Stove."
Flight Attendant Steve: "Steve."
Annie: "Stove, what kind of name is that?"
Flight Attendant Steve: "That's not a name - my name is Steve."
Annie: "Are you an appliance?"
Flight Attendant Steve: "No I'm a man."
Annie: "You're a flight attendant."
Flight Attendant Steve: "That's absolutely accurate."

And the amusing part was that Annie was sitting with another bridesmaid that were also scared of flying.

Quote from movie -
Woman on plane: "I had a dream last night that we went down."
Annie: "Oh God."
Woman on plane: "You were in it."
Annie: "What?"

And the injection of the scenes of her housemates ( who rents the house to her) a pair of weird siblings - the sister and brother who looks somewhat like aliens and acts like one. (hahahaha)

Annie: "You read my journal?!"
Annie's Roommate: "At first I did not know it was your diary. I thought it was a very sad handwritten book."

Making this movie even greater was the introduction of the theme of friendship and love through this comedy. Is friendship indeed greater than what riches (social status) can provide? Can love overcome all things? And are you the problem or solution to your current situation?

Quote from Movie-
Megan: "I don't associate with people who blame the world for their problems. You are your problem. You are also your solution."

The mental breakdown Annie suffers at the bridal shower, addresses the issue of friendship and social status. Would you rather your good friend tell you the truth or go along with the others in lies that even you yourself don't believe in.

Quote from the movie-
Lillian: Why can't you be happy for me, and then go home and talk about me behind my back like a normal person?

And her relationship with Rhodes (CHRIS O'DOWD) a good-heart policeman who is an innocent man who falls in her love with Annie. However due to Annie past experiences with men who have used her for sex primarily, Annie pushes him away even though she likes him as much.

His sweetness Quote from Movie-
Officer Rhodes: "Do you want to tell a cop about it? We're just like priests except we would tell everybody afterwards."

I would truly recommend this movie! I am going to buy the DVD when it comes out and keep it for another round of watching.

She is jealous of her best friend's growing relationship with a new friend who seemingly has everything she lacks - poise, money, success, beauty, and so forth.

MAYA RUDOLPH plays the best friend who becomes engaged to a man from a well-to-do family.

ROSE BYRNE plays Lillian's social-climbing new friend who actively vies with Annie for her affections. She is very charming to those who are easily impressed. She has married a rich man and becomes a step-mother to his children. Though having rich and fame, she has self-esteem problems as she is lonely and no good girlfriends to talk to

MELISSA McCARTHY plays a frequently rude and often ill-mannered bridesmaid who loves herself for who she is and is such a wonderful comedian.

WENDI McLENDON-COVEY plays the bride's cousin who is unhappy in her marriage and is openly upset with her marriage life. She laments that she and her husband still have frequent sex, but no longer kiss and her kids are a horror.

ELLIE KEMPER plays a bridesmaid who is newly married and still feeling blissfully happy. She however confesses that her and her husband's sex life has been lacking.

JILL CLAYBURGH plays Annie's supportive mother who attends AA meetings for the experience even though she has never had a drink.

JON HAMM plays a boorish man who wants only a sexual relationship with Annie and prefers that she not spend nights sleeping over at his house. He refers to her as his "Number 3," meaning she is the third woman in order of importance and desirability he calls on a list of sex partners when feeling amorous.

CHRIS O'DOWD plays a good-hearted cop who takes a liking to Annie after he cites her for broken taillights. He drinks socially and uses some profanity. As a cop, he lets civilian Annie ride along in his squad car while on duty and even allows her to use his radar speed gun.

Ootoya Japanese Restaurant 大戸屋

My Secondary school ex- classmates were planning for a gathering and I chance upon an amazing photo (below) on my friend's facebook page and it looked so yummy - don't you think so?

and so I asked my friend where was it. And she recommended:Ootoya Japanese Restaurant!
Directions: Sit the lift up to Level 8 of Orchard Central then walk all the way to the end .
Open: 11am – 9:30pm (last order)

They serve simple Japanese home-cook food. Very good for me who do not really take in raw food.

Thankfully I went there early - the queue had already started and I found out that they don’t take reservations. I waited for around twenty minutes for a table -

Kindly note: there are no chairs to sit down and no sms to inform - so if you have children take your children other places while you get one person in family / group to wait and call you once the number is nearing. The good thing about the place is that they have friendly staff who will entertain your request asking for an update on the status and the timing in a polite manner.

The food was good, affordable and the environment was good - wonderful to chill ( Oh! and the food comes quick!) . And its free flow of Japanese white rice if you order the set meal! :)

I had the Kasan ( On the menu: Its says its an Ootoya special - which is breaded chicken in onion special sauce). I like the crunchy fresh onions in the sauce/soup and how the sauce mixes with the bread crumbs on the chicken. I like.

I had wanted to try the one on my friend's facebook - fried pork cutlets with egg! but I prefer chicken.
I am going to try that the next time.

One of my friend tried the chicken and tofu soup with special steam mix rice presented in a bamboo steamer ( the dish on the menu itself already looks amazing) .Its delicious. The broth was boiled just nice - not too starchy, not too watery. And the chicken and tofu in it was a good mix! but the portion for this I find it quite a lot - probably 2/3 can share for small-eaters.

The other tried the rosu katsu set which consists of strips of fried pork loin. It was above average .. Crispy and hot - which is a must for such dishes.

I am gonna bring my parents there probably soon! :)

X-Men First Class

Watched X-Men:First Class yesterday night. Absolutely loved it! The opening starts in a Nazi concentration camp, where a young Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) - Magneto tries to destroy a metal gate that’s separated him from his parents via the power of his mind. It attracts the attention of a sadist Dr. Schmidt /Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) who shots Erik's poor mother in front of him to unleash the boy's powers using anger. It was such a heart-breaking scene!

Meanwhile, the scene changes to Charles (James McAvoy) starting as a child discovering Jennifer Lawrence (Shape-shifting Raven/Mystique) in his kitchen and realizing that he is not alone in this world as a mutant.

His designation as a professor in Oxford on the subject human mutation misled me into wondering what his special power was. It was mind reading!

The movie travels through Auschwitz, New York,England, Argentina, Las Vegas, Miami and Moscow. Feels like spinning on the globe of the world in history.Charles and Erik soon become part of the CIA mutant division and find themselves in the midst of the Cuban missile crisis.

Traversing from World War II to the cold war - the show reveals a secret history of the Cold War and our world at the brink of nuclear Armageddon.

So in the midst of all these political landscape, Erik is scouring Argentina for Shaw to take his revenge. The scene where he uses his metal twisting power to force-pluck a metal filing tooth from the insider - I could literally feel the pain.

New CIA agent Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) strips down to black, lacy nothings to go undercover and realizes the evidence of Mutants when Shaw is in his Vegas gentlemen's club with diamond-queen Emma Frost (January Jones) and trying to force Colonel Hendry to help with Shaw's Bay of Pigs scheme, showcases their powers.

After searching out numerous mutants, it was sad where Shaw appears and uses his "ability to absorb and re-use kinetic energy" to destroy one of the untrained mutants Edi Gathegi (Darwin Armondo). The helpless was such a sad feeling. So it was a joy when they were trained and they begin to realize that they have powers that could be controlled and they should be happy with who they are.

The recruitment and training sequences, unlocking of extraordinary potential through instinctive ingenuity - of the plasma-blasting Havok (Lucas Till); sonic screamer Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones); the adaptive Darwin (Edi Gathegi, too little seen); and big-footed Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) are particularly engaging!

For X-Men first class, it reminds me of how Xinjiang people who are labeled as a thief and pickpockets no matter where they are in China. It has been known for generations. And I heard they slit their wrist when they are caught and so police and many people do not dare to catch them but tries to avoid them. But perhaps they did it for livelihood because of the bad image imposed upon them? If they could be trained the right way... would there be a change?

In summary, I loved X-Men First Class. And the graphics were great!

Nicholas Hoult (Hank/Beast)who plays a smart inventor also a mutant with a web feet (that allows him to hang around) - however he wants to be normal - and so injects himself with a potion ; eventually it incites his genetic formation and it transforms him into Beast - with great strength.

Zoe Kravitz (Angel Salvadore/Wings) who gets entice by the evil side and leaves them.

Jason Flemyng (Azazel)

Caleb Landry Jones (Cassidy/Banshee) who has the ability to fly high and fast! The training for him was really funny!

Alex Gonzalez (Janos Questad/Riptide) who can garner twirl winds.

Urban Attack @ Velocity 2011

Been wanting to write about the Urban Attack@Velocity that I did 2 weeks back.
Since watching the shows on TV : Japanese Ninja Challenge ; Korean Dream Team; I wanted to try out something similar! And the opportunity came when I saw it at my friend's wedding. His friends had made him go through the obstacles on his last night as a bachelor.
And Of course, I immediately signed up- Women's open!

There were 4 open categories:
- Men's Open
- Women's Open
- Team Challenge (Mixed Open)
- Team Challenge (Men's Open)

Went for the trials on the 12th June to qualify for the finals but failed at the first rolling pin - but for my efforts, the organizers gave me an opportunity for the finals on the 25th June which sadly i failed again at the rolling pin.

Choice of dates for preliminaries:
21, 22, 28, 29 May and 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19 June 2011.
Final:
25 June 2011

BUT IT WAS SO FUN!
I will definitely do it again next year. 2012 with more practice :)

Before you start, there will be a safety briefing and they will ask you to put on the helmet and equipment

First station - Rock and roll barrels

There were people who ran across it ( I tried it the first time but I fell through - it was scary doing that as it was rolling while you were running!) While some used their bodies pushing and rolling ( I tried that the 2nd time but I fell through the big gap and hurt my back)

2nd station - Topsy turvy
You had to run on it and jump out asap o.w you will get giddy. For those with a fear of heights, this might also pose as an obstacle. And the gap between where you are standing, and the turning thing made it even scarier. Even viewing it from the side.

3rd station - Bear hug
Run, grab tight and swing yourself across! you must use the kinetic energy and grab it tight.If you don't and it gets stuck in the center, it requires a lot of strength to shift yourself across.

4th Station - The matrix Net ropes - you can either climb over - grabbing with your hands and moving with your feet ; or for those stronger guys, they use their arms to maneuver themselves to the destination

5th station - The giant balls

6th station - and the last station where many falter is the Helipad . You have to get your momentum right - once you lose your momentum , or once you turn the wrong side ; you're close to gone. But there are some who manage to salvage the situation. Wonderful!
